Kent Street wins top Geoscience competition

Under the clinical guidance of Earth Science teacher Ms Suzy Urbaniak the Year 10 Academic Extension students won the 2009 Petroleum Club School Project competition. In doing so Year 10 students Matthew Toll, Josephine Newman, Adrian Webb, Durrah Alberton, Philip French and Stephen Winslade presented an outstanding project that was judged better than entries from 650 academically talented students from twenty-one other high-profile public and non-government schools.

The winning prize is for four students undertake a unique excursion to Victoria’s Bass Strait to visit major petroleum installations that supply gas and oil to Eastern Australia.  They will stay in a variety of accommodation during their four-day excursion and also visit the famous 12 Apostles tourist coast. This is an outstanding achievement and is indicative of the high quality work that these students can produce.  Well done Suzy and Ms Helen Burton who has strongly supported this great work.

From the Principal

principal.pngI begin by applauding the success of Marcus North a graduate of the Kent Street Specialist Cricket Program. Marcus has demonstrated yet again how successful Kent Street students can be if they set their sights high and persist in the achievement of their goals. Other past-students also in the sporting spotlight are Chris Mayne who is playing for the Fremantle Dockers and Brad Dalziell and James Hawksley who are playing for the Brisbane Lions.

The start to term has been a busy one. The Year 9 students have now undertaken National testing in literacy and numeracy and State testing (MSE) in Science, and Society and Environment. Year 10 students have completed their mid-year exams and are engaged in subject selections for Year 11. The other years will be engaged in subject selections in the near future. The recent Fashion Camp was a great success and the school choir has begun its practice for the Kent Street Variety Show to be held on 10 and 11 September. Everyone is invited to attend.

SCHOOL UNIFORM REQUIREMENTS

The law governing compulsory school uniform has been endorsed by parents, students and teachers.  Wearing school uniform minimises the following aspects of school life:

  1. Students competing with each other to wear more expensive clothing with popular designer labels and the consequent pressure on parents to purchase this type of clothing as school wear.
  2. Non-students entering the school campus, as they will be easily recognised.
  3. The overall cost of dressing students for school.
  4. The formation of cult groups based on uniform and the unacceptable behaviour that can be generated by such a group.
  5. Kent Street Senior High School Students will be identified whilst engaged in off site activities, eg excursions.
